The category
What “body contouring device” actually means
It is a market name, not a technology. Understanding that is the first useful thing a buyer can do, because it stops you comparing devices that are not comparable.
Search volume built this category, not engineering. “Body contouring device” is the phrase American practice owners type when they are looking for equipment to build a body-focused service line, and manufacturers of very different machines have all learned to answer to it. Under the label you will find mechanical connective-tissue platforms, cryo-thermal spa devices, radiofrequency systems, vacuum systems, ultrasound systems, muscle-stimulation systems and combinations of several of those.
Those devices do not share a mechanism, a session length, an operator requirement, a consumable model, a regulatory position or a price. Grouping them together is useful for finding suppliers and useless for choosing between them. Ask for the 510(k) number, the configuration it applies to, and a link to the clearance letter. Then read the indications-for-use statement yourself on the FDA database. A brochure adjective is not a clearance.
2. What does a session look like on the floor?
Length, operator, room requirements, what the client wears, what the client feels, how many can be booked in a day. This determines your schedule and your staffing more than any spec line.
3. What are the consumables, per client?
Gel, suits, tips, cartridges, applicators, replacement parts, software fees, per-session licence fees. Get the schedule in writing. A cheap device with an expensive consumable is an expensive device.
4. Who is allowed to operate it in my state?
Scope of practice varies. Confirm with your state board before you buy, not after. A device your team cannot legally run is a very large paperweight.
5. How many units are installed within twenty miles of me?
This decides whether you are creating a category locally or joining a price war inside one. Ask for the number and for who owns them.
6. What is the installed base worldwide, and can I verify it?
A manufacturer reference list is marketing, but a checkable one is still evidence. Ask what the count is, what it counts, and where it is published.
7. What happens in the first 90 days after delivery?

The operating model. No consumables — routine operation uses low-cost conductive gel. One trained therapist runs the room. Body, skin and facial sessions all come from the same device, so a single purchase supports several lines on your menu.

The field
How the rest of the category is usually organised

Mechanical connective-tissue platforms. Devices that work the skin and underlying tissue mechanically, usually over a client body suit.
